Physicals Q & A

What is a physical?

Physicals are comprehensive exams focused on your child’s overall health and well-being. They’re designed to reduce risks of chronic illness and disease and provide an opportunity for your child to receive immunizations.

Children are often required to receive physicals prior to beginning a new school year and before participating in sports activities.

Your child’s pediatrician also performs a physical exam at each well-baby and well-child visit to check on growth, development, and overall health.

What should I expect at my child’s physical appointment?

In addition to monitoring your child’s physical health with vital sign checks, height and weight measurements, routine blood work as needed, as well as vision and hearing exams, the Westchester Park Pediatrics team assesses whether your child is reaching developmental milestones.

If your child is due for any routine vaccinations, they can be given during a physical.

Physical appointments also provide an opportunity to discuss any concerns about sleep, nutrition, behavioral issues, or any problems at school.

When does my child need a physical?

The first physical should take place shortly after your newborn’s birth, with ongoing routine exams and immunizations scheduled as per the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines.

You can bring your baby in for well-child physicals at:

  • 3-5 days of life
  • One month
  • Two months
  • Four months
  • Six months
  • Nine months
  • One year
  • Fifteen months
  • Eighteen months
  • 24 months
  • 30 months
  • Three years
  • Four years

And once every year thereafter for annual health supervision visits that include a physical exam as well as developmental behavioral and learning assessments.

Your child may also need a physical before the start of a new school year or before the start of a sports season or other activity.
