Sick Visits Q & A

What is a sick visit?

A sick visit is an essential part of providing quality health care to children when they have signs of illness. The team at Westchester Park Pediatrics offers same-day appointments to identify the cause of your child’s symptoms and create a plan of care that ensures they return to their healthiest selves as quickly as possible.

Sick visits help diagnose and treat symptoms such as:

  • Sore throat
  • Earache
  • Headache
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Cough or chest congestion
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Mild or moderate asthma attack
  • Allergic reaction
  • Fever

Sick visits are a focused time for diagnosing and treating your child’s signs of illness. The office staff can help you schedule your child’s routine examinations, immunizations, and school physicals for another time.

What happens during a sick visit?

During a sick visit, the Westchester Park Pediatrics team collects information about your child’s symptoms, performs a focused assessment, and creates a personalized treatment plan based on their findings.

Your pediatrician may also order:

  • Blood or urine studies
  • Strep or flu test
  • Chest X-ray
  • Antibiotics or other medications

They may recommend at-home treatments, such as warm liquids, gargling with salt water, oral hydration, or a bland diet. They may suggest you schedule a follow-up visit in a few days or weeks.

When should I schedule a sick visit for my child?

Sometimes it’s hard to know whether you should keep your child home to rest and get better on their own, or bring them in for an evaluation. The Westchester Park Pediatrics team recommends you schedule a sick visit if your child has:

  • A sore throat and fever, especially with a history of strep
  • Severe abdominal pain or any pain lasting more than three days
  • Painful or frequent urination
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Earache with fever or difficulty sleeping
  • Fever lasting more than five days or a fever exceeding 104°F
  • Any fever in children less than two months old

If your child has a headache with a fever, especially after a fall, head trauma, or neck pain, they must see their pediatrician as soon as possible. As always, if your child has any symptoms that are concerning to you, your pediatric team provides excellent care to protect your child’s health and to set your mind at ease.

If your child has signs of illness or concerning symptoms, call the office or schedule a sick visit with Westchester Park Pediatrics today.
